Porsche 356SC

Just before the outbreak of the Second World War, automotive designer Ferdinand Porsche designed the Volkswagen, which in later decades was remembered as the iconic "Beetle." He also designed and built a concept race car, which he designated as the "Type 64." Not surprisingly, this vehicle - which won the Berlin to Rome Road Race of 1939 - looked a bit like its smaller brother, but was larger, more powerful and more streamlined. Of the three built, only one survived the war; currently, it is being kept by the Society of Friends of Classic Automobiles, and is periodically displayed in car museums.

After the war, Porsche began building a series of sports cars that would change the course of automotive history. Known as the Porsche 356, the prototype was built in 1948 by hand in a large garage in Gmünd, Austria - as were forty nine subsequent vehicles. It was an arduous, time and labor intensive process that took two years. By 1950 however, the new Porsche 356 had proven itself by winning a number of road races in Europe - and the stage was set for the mass production of a new kind of sports car that would go on to be one of the most successful of all time.

The 356 series arrived at U.S. dealerships in 1955. The first available model was the 356A, a classic that today commands high prices in the low six figures at auction. It wasn't cheap back then, either - a new Porsche 350 in 1956 cost as much as a new Cadillac at the time - around $4000 (approximately $34,000 in today's dollars). It was popular, however, even though no more than about 5,000 ever made it to the States before it was replaced by the 356B. It was a Porsche 356A that was being driven by actor and motor sports enthusiast James Dean when he met his end on a California highway in September of 1955.

The Porsche 356SC was the culmination of the 356 line, the last model to be produced before it was replaced by the Porsche 911. Today, it is one of the most sought-after classic Porsches by collectors; a Porsche 356 SC for sale can fetch as much as a quarter million dollars. The Porsche 356 SC cabrio model is one of the few that actually looks as good with its top down as it does with the top up. In a few cases, the Porsche 356 SC motor was a special dual overhead cam engine, giving it extra performance. This series was so popular that it continued to sell even after the subsequent 911 had begun arriving at dealers' lots.

You'll still find Porsche 356 parts for sale from many sources. Prepare to pay a pretty penny for them, however - unless you check out PartsGeek.com. This website carries an extensive inventory of parts and accessories for almost everything on the road today. Often, these parts are priced at discounts of up to 80% off.

I am restoring a vintage Porsche and have a tight budget. Searching for OEM parts within budget is indeed hard however Partsgeek came through with the OEM parts and significant savings.
