Mercedes 280SL

The W113 series is a two-seat roadster/coupe that first appeared at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show. It was produced from 1963 through 1971 and was a replacement for the 300SL and the 190SL. A total of 48,912 113SLs were produced of which 19,440 were sold in the United States. The W113 SL series was developed with a slightly concave hardtop. All models included an inline six-cylinder engine along with multi-port fuel injection. The W113 SLs were classified as Coupe Roadsters and had soft tops with an optional removal hardtop.

The Mercedes 280SL made its first appearance in December 1967 and was produced through February 23, 1971 when it was replaced by its successor, the new and heavier 350SL. Throughout the years the W 113 series underwent substantial changes that included its beginning as a sports car and transformation into a grand tourer. By that time the models for the U.S. market were usually equipped with the 4-speed automatic transmission and air conditioning. Those models that were equipped with manual transmissions included either the 4-speed or the optional ZF 5-speed the latter of which was only ordered 882 times but is a highly sought after original option in today's market. Manual transmissions without air conditioning were the predominant choices in Europe. More than half of the 23,885 280SLs that were produced were sold in the U.S.

The main change to the model was an upgrade to a 2.8 L engine with 170 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque power. The change required the use of an oil-cooler which was placed next to the radiator in a vertical configuration. Before the engine was even fitted to the car it was bench-tested to ensure the power specifications would last as expected. The M130 with the inline-six was replaced with the M110 inline-six with R107 in the 1974 European 280SL models. This configuration was also used in the W109 300S which replaced the expensive 3 liter M189 inline-six alloy style.

Some of the most notable changes Mercedes made to the 280SL include the following:

o December 1967--One piece wheel covers like those on W108 and W109 sedans

o October 1968--Sealed beam headlights with no fog lights installed on U.S. models

o February 1969--Change in tail lights to include amber turn signals

o May 1969--The ZF 5-speed manual transmission was discontinued as a listed option and was only available as a special order

o July 1969--The headlight assembly on U.S. models changed to include lower section in full amber, side markers, ignition that was transistorized, and improvements were made to the emission controls

o August 1969--A heated rear window was added to hardtops, hazard lights were installed on all models, and a single key for all locks became normal

o April 1970--Optional Bosch Lichteinheit headlights became an option

o August 1970--Fuchs alloy wheels became a factory option

1969 Mercedes 280SL Shock Absorber

Somewhat Satisfied
Reviewer: Don Mitchell

This unit looks simular to the original but the hookup for the vacuum line is placed different and you have to get a new longer line to hook up plus the pedal hookup bolt is for a straight one thus you have to make a collar to fit the hole in pedal hookup so you can make the new bolt setup work as old bolt will not work.
