Timing chains are the pieces of equipment in your Ford Escape's internal combustion engine that synchronize the rotation of the crankshaft and the camshafts. The camshafts coordinate the vertical movements of pistons within cylinders with the opening and shutting of the intake and exhaust valves. In order to calibrate this precisely, the speed of the crankshaft must be exactly twice that of the camshafts; otherwise, the valves and pistons may collide with the camshaft and break.
