BMW 528e Replacement Timing Belt Information
The timing belt on a BMW 528e has molded teeth that fit into notches etched into the motor's crankshaft and camshaft. The flexible rubber belt synchronizes operations between the two shafts---hence, the name timing belt. Because the timing belt is made of rubber, and works hard while the engine is running, it must be periodically inspected to make sure it remains up to the job. A faulty timing belt can announce itself with noises emanating from beneath the timing belt cover.
Timing belts on the BMW need replacing at specified times. This is recommended by the manufacturer, and failure to do as instructed can create severe motor damage. Replacing a timing belt is also a good time to change over all rotating devices that have bearings. This includes the idler and tension pulleys.
