A Nissan Xterra uses the throttle position sensor to inform the engine's operating computer how heavy a driver's foot is on the gas. That's an important bit of information for the computer to digest---and it must be correct. The throttle position sensor is sensitive to the accelerator pedal's pressure. The sensor relays what it detects to the engine control unit, which uses that data to control how much fuel is needed to maintain a particular speed. If the throttle position sensor starts to falter---likely because of old age---the engine's computer can't work fast enough with other engine parts to keep fuel flow at acceptable levels.
