The Problem of Noise Pollution in Autos

Since the invention of the automobile, it has continued to evolve from humble origins of the early internal combustion engine of the late 1800's to today; automakers have continued to improve the design and functionality of the car. While the automobile has changed the way we travel from place to place, it is not without some major hurdles to overcome.

Early automobiles had engines that ran on steam and gasoline. These early internal combustion engines were very loud and resulted in billows of smoke coming from the engines. These early engines were also not very environmentally friendly. In fact, automobiles have historically been one of the leading causes of noise pollution.

Noise pollution can be described as loud or excessive noise that can disturb the environment we live in. The disturbance can be to both human and animal life. While autos have been a contributor to noise pollution, it is not the only cause. Noise pollutants can also be the result of machinery, music, aircraft, and many others in our everyday life. These pollutants can have a negative impact on the health of humans and wildlife alike.

Laws have been put in place that attempts to help control external noise. The Noise Control Act of 1972 and the Quiet Communities Act of 1978 were major federal efforts to curb excess noise, especially in urban areas. While these laws were put in place by the United States government, enforcement and regulating noise is the responsibility of the state and local governments.

While automobiles are less of a problem in polluting the environment, it still exists. By being aware of the environmental impact that car usage has had in the past, we can make sure we take steps to protect our environment in the future.
