Struts integrate the job of a shock absorber with lateral support; this eliminates any necessity for an upper suspension arm. Because Struts give the suspension both damping and lateral support, they have to be much bulkier and stiffer than a regular spring. One of the important pieces of the suspension system is the Struts, which are essentially shock absorbers mounted inside springs. The Struts function as dampeners similar to the shock absorbers, but they also provide support for the vehicle's suspension.
