Saab 9000 Replacement Starter Information
Your Saab 9000's starter is the motor that turns your crankshaft for the first time after you turn your ignition key before the process of internal combustion kicks in. The starter is comprised of three elements. The armature is a iron core that rides on a central shaft. The armature is surrounded by coils that receive current from the battery, essentially transforming the armature into a large magnet. On the rear of the shaft sits the commutator, which contains carbon brushes attached to the battery. The Bendix drive is the gear that engages the flywheel, which actually moves the crankshaft. The starter sits between the engine block and the transmission housing. Bosch units without the studs are NEW units that Bosch also supplies to SAAB for their replacement needs. SAAB has approved the use of this NEW unit in place of the orignal starter. These NEW units do NOT require the use of the original rear mounting bracket.
