Research on Shock Absorber for Volkswagen Vanagon

The third-generation Volkswagen Transporter, the Vanagon, requires functional shock absorbers to allow for a comfortable ride. Worn shocks will make any drive uncomfortable for you and your passengers. Even if you have repldace a shock absorber before, that doesn't mean it won't wear out again after a few years. This is a part that withstands a lot of abuse. Every time your Volkswagen Vanagon goes over a bump, the shock absorber takes the brunt of it. Replacing the part when necessary will enable your tires, brakes, and engine to last longer.

How a Shock Absorber Works

A shock absorber consists of an outer and inner cylinder. The outer shell seals in the fluid or gas, while the inner one houses a piston that moves against the fluid/gas every time the vehicle goes over a bump, crack, rock, or anything that causes up and down motion. Over time, seals can break and leaks can form. Damage to the housing and connections of Vanagon Bilstein shocks can leave your ride vulnerable to uncomfortable sensations and wear to more expensive parts.

Symptoms of a Bad Shock Absorber

The vibrations can get quite intense when a shock absorber wears out. You'll feel every bump through the steering wheel, and the vehicle might swerve and nose dive whenever you step on the brakes. A bad seal can amplify the movement of the piston, affecting how your vehicle performs on turns and when braking. It might take longer to stop when you apply the brakes. Other signs of shock absorber wear include uneven tire wear because parts of the tire may not be contacting the road. Even the best shocks for VW bus vehicles can develop leaks and cracked rubber bushings.

Do Car Shocks Leak?

Shock absorbers will eventually leak. The piston seal or the valving that controls fluid flow can fail. Oil may be seen dripping down the side of the part at first, and then it progresses to the point it will collect on the ground under the vehicle. The part doesn't need to be replaced unless the leak is severe and there are other problems with it.

How Much Does It Cost to Change the Shock Absorbers?

If you need to replace a rear shock absorber on a 1990 vehicle, expect to spend around $236 to $387, but replacing both can set you back $485 to $790. That's less than Vanagon front shock replacement. A front strut/shock absorber can be as much as $656 and two can cost as much as $1,265 to replace. For lower cost Vanagon or best shocks for Vanagon Westfalia vehicles, head over to PartsGeek.com. even VW Type 2 shock absorbers can be bought for less. Our minimal operating costs and desire to help customers save mean you avoid the unnecessarily high prices across the automotive parts market. It should serve as an incentive to fix your shocks sooner, have a smoother ride, and replace the parts before more expensive repairs are needed. At the very least, your ride will be more enjoyable.

Reviewer: Smooth Out Ride

I installed the KYB front shocks on a 1985 VW Westfalia.

Installation was easy. The KYB shocks are high quality. My Westfalia now feels sure footed.

Be sure not to lose the factory bottom spacer and top sleeve when installing these fine shocks.

Reviewer: KYB's perfect match for my Vanagon

I had recently put on Monroe Gasmatic HD shocks on my GL Vanagon (not a camperized unit). They were way too stiff. So I replaced them after only 2K miles with these KYBs, which match the vehicle. The ride is exactly what I expected and got.
