Research on Oxygen Sensor for Volkswagen Jetta

The recent breed of computerized engines relies a lot on sensors to get accurate information about the engine performance, emissions, and other important factors. It's important that the sensors in your vehicle provide articulate information. Otherwise the car will have problematic drivability, increased fuel consumption and emission failures. One of the most important sensors in your Volkswagen Jetta is the Oxygen Sensor, otherwise known as the O2 sensor. The first oxygen sensor was introduced back in 1976. The Volkswagen Jetta Oxygen sensor is usually mounted on the exhaust manifold to monitor how much unburnt oxygen is in the exhaust as the exhaust exits the engine. Monitoring the oxygen levels in your car is a simple way of gauging the fuel mixture. This is because it communicates with the computer and tells it if the fuel mixture is burning rich oxygen or lean oxygen.

HOW DOES THE OXYGEN SENSOR WORK?

The Oxygen sensor in your Volkswagen Jetta works like a miniature generator that produces its own voltage when it gets hot. Inside the vented cover at the end of your Volkswagen Jetta's sensor, that is crewed on the exhaust manifold there is a zirconium bulb. This bulb is coated on the outside with a porous layer of platinum, and inside the bulb, there are two strips of platinum that usually serve as electrodes or contacts. So how does the sensor really work? The oxygen sensor usually generates about 0.9 volts when there is a rich fuel mixture in the exhaust manifold, and there is little-unburned oxygen. When the mixture is detected as lean, the voltage will usually drop to 0.1 volts. When the mixture is balanced, the sensor will produce 0.45 volts. Therefore, when the computer receives the rich signal (high voltage 0.9 volts) from the sensor, it leans the fuel mixture to reduce the sensor's reading. When the oxygen sensor reading is lean, the computer reverses making the fuel mixture go rich. Therefore, this constant change of fuel mixtures occurs at different speeds and depending on your Volkswagen Jetta's fuel system. The oxygen sensor also needs to be hot; this is about 600 degrees before it can start generating the voltage signal.

VOLKSWAGEN JETTA OXYGEN SENSOR COST

A Volkswagen VW Jetta oxygen sensor replacement costs between $130 and $296. The labor costs are usually estimated between $57 and $82 while the parts are priced between $73 and $214. It's advisable to get a personalized estimate that is based on your location and specific car model and year. It is also advisable that you get your parts from a trusted reliable online retailer to reduce the cost of replacement. Therefore, when it comes to purchasing a new Volkswagen Jetta Oxygen sensor, you can get a better deal from CarGeeks.com, we are an online retailer that sells auto parts and accessories exclusively online at affordable prices. There are no overhead costs involved translating in significant savings.

COMMON SYMPTOMS OF OXYGEN SENSOR FAILURE

When your oxygen sensor malfunctions, it can cause your vehicle to fail an emissions test. A failed sensor will cause a trouble code that can be set and the check engine light will be indicated on your dashboard. Your oxygen sensor can fail in case they are contaminated with oil or coolant or silicone. In case your sensor failed due to fluid contamination, the source of the fluid needs to be determined to avoid contaminating the replacement sensor.

Very Satisfied
Reviewer: Serendipity

with 186K miles on my 2000 Jetta GLS, I was hoping a new oxygen sensor would remove the check engine light, but after 75 miles, it came back on. Will probably order a catalytic converter now. Have ordered other parts and am very satisfied, esp. the shipping, which is speedy.
