Pontiac Grand Am Replacement Oxygen Sensor Information
The Pontiac Grand Am, Pontiac's best selling car, had two production runs in the seventies, 1973-75 and 1978-80. It was reintroduced in 1985 and produced for another 20 years. Like most cars built after 1980, the later models all have a Pontiac Grand Am oxygen sensor located within the exhaust system. The Grand Am, in fact, has two, located on either side of the catalytic converter. The Pontiac Grand Am's oxygen sensors are responsible for communicating with the engine's computer (ECU) to let it know whether the fuel mixture being delivered is too lean, too rich or just right. It gets this information by analyzing the exhaust gases. The ECU is always striving for the perfect fuel mixture for optimum engine performance and the lowest emissions. This is a continual balancing act dependent on temperature, air pressure and mass. The oxygen sensors will eventually get fouled from exhaust contaminants, at which point emissions will rise and performance will decline. New, quality replacement parts should then be installed.
