Mazda automobiles are precision built to meet the needs of drivers who want personality, dependability and value from their machines. For eye-catching style with plenty of punch vehicle buyers turn to Mazda for their extraordinary car desires. High fuel efficiency comes with a price, since the Mazda Protege needs top-quality replacement and aftermarket parts to operate at the highest efficiency. "Greener", more fuel-efficient cars like the compact Mazda Protege were designed to be kept well tuned in order to continue achieving outstanding levels of economy. If an issue develops or a part needs to be replaced, don't economize with the wrong component. Your Mazda Protege is meant to have efficiency-optimized auto parts to run at the highest efficiency. Your fine Mazda was made with the highest quality and craftsmanship; it needs replacement parts of a similar high level of quality. Usually found on the exhaust manifold, the Mazda Protege Oxygen Sensor passes oxygen levels present in the car's exhaust system to the engine computer. A Mazda Protege Oxygen Sensor is an element of your emissions control system and aids in changes in the air to fuel ratio, eliminating the need for manual altitude adjustments. Whenever the ratio of fuel to air is not adequate, poor engine power will be the result; at the same time, a fuel-heavy air to fuel ratio causes damage to your engine and large quantities of air pollution from your vehicle's exhaust. Your vehicle has a place in your heart because it has high performance and awesome style, so to keep it going in its best condition you need the ultimate in high-quality parts and accessories. Great capacity and road performance depend on outstanding components and accessories. Great parts delivered by a reputable source are usually the most effective approach to improve a car or truck. Research on Oxygen Sensor for Mazda Protege

Oxygen sensors provide information that's used to manage the engine in your car. If a sensor isn't working properly, the engine computer can't respond properly to rich or lean fuel mixtures. A lot of problems can result and the engine won't perform as it was designed to. Most owners aren't happy with getting less out of their investment. If an O2 sensor is found to be the problem, it can be easily replaced and you can even find lower priced components on the web, so there's less of a reason to hold off on repairs.

Common Mazda Protégé O2 Sensor Problems

The Check Engine light provides an alert that can save you a lot of trouble if you pay attention to it. This indicator can mean many different things, but a faulty oxygen sensor is one of them, and often a reason for the light coming on in the first place. Your gas mileage may be going down as a result of a bad sensor. Too much gasoline being injected into the engine causes it to be burned faster. Changes in engine performance can signal an O2 sensor is failing. For example, the engine can idle roughly or misfire because input from the sensor is used to manage combustion intervals and engine timing in addition to the air/fuel ratio.

What Is an Oxygen Sensor?

From the 2003 Mazda Protégé oxygen sensor location in the exhaust manifold, the part is able to measure unburned oxygen in the exhaust. It relays a signal in the form of a voltage to the computer. The level of the voltage tells the system if the mixture is just right, has a rich amount of fuel and less oxygen, or has a leaner fuel mixture with more oxygen. A mixture that is too rich or too lean is bad and cannot only cause air pollution, but engine damage as well. With the downstream O2 sensor, Mazda Protégé vehicles can adapt to various operating conditions. In addition to those that are internal, air temperature, barometric pressure, and engine load affect the quality of the fuel mixture.

How Often Do You Need to Change an Oxygen Sensor?

Although O2 sensors installed in the mid-1980s to mid-1990s last for 60,000 miles, those manufactured from 1996 on can go for 100,000 miles before needing to be replaced. Heat, vibration, and exposure to volatile gases degrade oxygen sensors over time. So does electrical wear, corrosion, and particle deposits. Any sensor will become less accurate as time goes by.

Cost of Mazda O2 Sensor Replacement

You can have a 2003 Mazda Protégé sensor replaced for $229 to $296. That's less than Mazda 3 oxygen sensor replacement in a 2008 model year, which runs from $186 to $339. You can see how the price can vary based on the car, model year, and where the work is done. Your best bet, though, is if someone who knows how to test O2 sensor systems checks the vehicle and replaces faulty parts. There's not much labor with installing an oxygen sensor, so you won't pay much on this front. That also lets you take advantage of low prices with PartsGeek.com. Our O2 sensors and other automotive parts are sold for less because we operate with a minimal overhead.
