Volvo S60 Replacement Master Cylinder Information
Your Volvo S60's master cylinder serves two functions. It's a reservoir that contains the brake fluid your brake system needs in order to bring your vehicle to a stop, and it also applies the pressure needed to initiate the braking process. When you step down on your brake pedal, the pressure of this motion forces fluid out of the master cylinder then through the brake lines and finally into your brakes. Your vehicle uses separate sets of brakes for your front and rear wheels. Master cylinders are composed of two chambers so that if one set of brakes goes out, you'll always have backup brakes. Master cylinders occasionally spring leaks. When that happens, your brake pedal will feel spongy, and it will continue sinking to the floor even after you take your foot off it.
