Subaru Legacy Replacement Master Cylinder Information
Your Subaru Legacy's master cylinder is designed to ensure you'll always have back up if the brakes on your front or rear wheels go out. When you step on your brake, you push hydraulic fluid from your master cylinder into your brake lines and up against the braking mechanisms on your wheels. Your front wheels use disc brakes while your rear wheels use drum brakes. By using two separate chambers, the master cylinder ensures that if something happens to one set of brakes on the road, the second set will still be operative. Master cylinders can develop leaks over time. Leaking master cylinders cause brake pedals to develop a characteristic spongy feeling.
