Mercedes S430 Replacement Master Cylinder Information
Your Mercedes S430's master cylinder is a two-chambered reservoir that contains brake fluid. When you step on your brake pedal, you push cylinders connected to the master cylinder through linkage that creates the pressure necessary to shoot brake fluid through your brake lines. This brake fluid, in turn, creates the pressure that engages the brake mechanisms on your front and rear brakes. Your Mercedes S430 uses a disc braking system on its front brakes and a drum braking system on its rear brakes. The two chambers of the master cylinder are designed to provide brake fluid to the front and rear brakes independently. This redundancy ensures that you will always have backup brakes if one set of brakes fails. When your master cylinder isn't operating properly, you'll notice your brakes feel spongy.
