Ford Explorer Replacement Master Cylinder Information
The brake master cylinder is an integral part of the Ford Explorer vehicle braking system. It is the part that releases brake fluid to the brake system when the brake pedal is depressed. This pushes the master cylinder piston which in turn pushes the brake fluid into the brake lines and then into the brake caliper or the wheel cylinder depending on the model. The master cylinder is very important to the safety of the vehicle.
On vehicles that have disc brakes, the fluid being pushed by the piston from the master cylinder into the brake lines pushes a piston in the brake caliper. This is what causes the brake pads to act. There have been recurring problems reported with the master cylinder on 2010 and 2011 Ford Explorers. Replacing the master cylinder seems to fix most of the complaints, but some complaints are not so easily resolved.
