Mitsubishi Montero Sport Replacement Ignition Control Unit Information
The ignition control unit (ICU) on your Mitsubishi Montero Sport is a small, electronic device responsible for sending the ignition spark to the spark plugs, although not directly. First, the ICU sends an electronic charge to the ignition coils. From there the charge travels down the spark plug wires to finally arrive at the spark plugs which are responsible for igniting the air and fuel mixture that has been injected into the engine cylinders for combustion.
As the ICU begins to flag the spark it delivers to the coils becomes weak and erratic until finally it quits altogether. A typical problem with ICUs is an internal short. A common symptom is a vehicle that starts and runs until it heats up, at which point it quits and won't restart until cooled.
