Research on Ignition Coil for Volkswagen Passat

Your Volkswagen Passat needs the ignition coil to fire the spark plug. You have a coil for every cylinder under your engine, but that does not mean that each one is critical to the operation of your engine. If even one coil fails, you will immediately notice some VW ignition coil symptoms that should not be ignored. Without replacing a bad ignition coil, you could do more damage to your engine, which will cost you much more than the price of a new ignition coil in the future.

Symptoms of a Bad Ignition Coil

There will be several signs that you have a bad ignition coil on your VW Passat. If you are driving along without any issues and your engine suddenly dies, you may have a failed ignition coil, but this is not the only sign. There are some more subtle problems a bad ignition coil can cause. Your Passat's gas mileage may drop, the engine might backfire or misfire, and you may have to replace your spark plugs more often.

VW Passat Ignition Coil Recall

In 2003, Volkswagen issued a recall of certain 2001, 2002, and early 2003 VW Passats that had defective ignition coils. Each cylinder on your VW Passat has its own ignition coil, and if even one coil burns out, it can drop your engine's power exponentially. Ignoring the problem for too long could over heat the catalytic converter, resulting in severe engine damage that would cost even more to repair. At the time of the recall, there were not enough new ignition coils to replace all the coils on all affected vehicles, and those that did have problems only had the failed coil replaced, though all the others were likely to go at any time. You may be driving an older Passat that was never repaired and at risk for any of the ignition coils to fail at any time. If you have a 2001, 2002, or 2003 Passat, take it to your local Volkswagen dealer to get it checked out and see if your car was under the VW ignition coil recall and if you qualify for a new set of ignition coils. If you don't own one of those model years, get your Passat checked out anyway because the issue was reported in some later models, too.

How Much Does an Ignition Coil Cost?

A single ignition coil can run around $60, but installation costs can almost quadruple this price or increase it by even more. For one coil to be replaced on a 2007 Passat, you could expect to pay between $210 and $459. Your repair may cost more or less than the suggested price because different model years and labor costs at various mechanics can drastically affect the amount you actually pay.

Cheaper Ignition Coils for Your VW

If you need more than one ignition coil, you don't want to spend a lot per coil because the price will dramatically increase the more you purchase, and even if you are only buying one coil, you will still want to pay the lowest price possible. To do so, shop at PartsGeek.com for your VW ignition coil replacement to save money and enjoy a great selection of parts.
