Toyota Corolla Replacement Idle Control Valve Information
When you aren't pressing the gas pedal, your Toyota Corolla engine is still turning. A small amount of air always bypasses the main pedal-actuated valve and supplies the engine so that it doesn't have to wait for you to press the gas to go forward every time you get a green light. The amount of air that flows is determined by how open the idle control valve is.
The idle control valve is operated by the vehicle's electronic control unit. It uses an electrically actuated solenoid switch to determine how far to open the valve. The electronic control unit tracks how fast the engine is idling and uses the valve to maintain a steady rate. Idle control valves can temporarily fail as a result of dirt, oil or other obstructions that jam things up, but those whose solenoids fail must be replaced.
