When an automobile's gears are disengaged, but the internal combustion engine is still operating, the car is said to be idling. The idle control valve transmits air flow data to your Dodge Dakota's electronic control module, which then determines your vehicle's idling RPM. The idle control valve contains a shaft with a conical point. When this point pulls out, it increases the amount of air flowing through the throttle, and RPMs increase.
