They allow for smooth, easy and controlled operation of the hood, or bonnet, when being opened or closed and are able to hold the hood lid securely in place when in the fully open position. Once they begin to age, however, their gripping power will typically be reduced as the hydraulic seals become worn and pressure from within the cylinders starts to escape. Perhaps the hood movement isn't as smooth as it was before or the struts are struggling to hold the lid open with reliability.
