Replacing the fuel tank on a Pontiac Grand Am must have one consistent factor---extreme caution. Gasoline is highly volatile and its vapors can explode literally without warning. Don't try to take out the existing Grand Am tank without being absolutely sure that you can handle the fuel still in it. Use a siphon to remove as much gasoline as possible. Then begin removing the old tank by loosening the straps holding it. Don't use the same straps before carefully checking their condition. Get new ones just to be safe.
One safety measure when replacing a Grand Am fuel tank is to first remove the negative battery cable. Also, take out the fuel cap which will help eliminate pressure built up by the gasoline. Take care that the tank, when unhooked, is carefully dropped to the ground. A good source of gas tank replacement detail is at Parts Geek.
