Saturn Ion 2 Replacement Expansion Tank Information
The expansion tank on your Saturn Ion 2 isn't a piece of equipment required by your vehicle for it to run properly, but it sure makes life easier. The coolant/water mixture that's in the car's radiator system is responsible for circulating cooling fluid to the engine and, in so doing, becomes boiling hot in the process. In order to keep the system from blowing up under the intense heat and pressure, the radiator incorporates a pressure-relief valve that allows excess fluid that has expanded beyond the capacity of the radiator system to escape to a separate holding vessel.
This expansion tank contains the excess coolant rather than letting it simply run out onto the ground.
