BMW 740i Replacement Crank Position Sensor Information
The engine crank position sensor on your BMW 740i is one of the most critical sensors anywhere on the vehicle and, when faulty, can cause severe engine damage and total shutdown if not replaced in a timely fashion. The crank position sensor sends information to the car's engine computer regarding the position and rotational speed of the crankshaft. The computer uses this data to determine ignition and fuel injection timing. This sensor can become burnt, worn out or contaminated by oil or other engine fluids, at which time it's imperative to replace it as soon as possible. The check engine light should go on and the computer error codes should identify the problem.
