BMW 328i Replacement Crank Position Sensor Information
The crank position sensor is required for accurate ignition timing. This electronic device monitors the position and rotational speed of the crankshaft in the engine. It also determines engine speed and sets ignition timing. All cars made after 1980 have crank position sensors. These components are located on the engine in close proximity to the crankshaft. They are extremely important to proper engine operation.
Prolonged exposure to engine oil and vibration will eventually cause the crank position sensor to fail. A damaged sensor will illuminate the check engine light and affect car operation.
