Working only when the vehicle key is turned to start the engine, the Beetle Volkswagen cold start valve gets the engine started. In line with the fuel rail, the Beetle Volkswagen cold start valve is located on top of the intake air distribution box. A double relay provides the power necessary for this specialized valve to work properly. As the start key turns, a thermo-timer switch that is a grounded connection with a metal contact covered by a heating element fires the valve that injects fuel into the engine. As soon as the key is witched off the start position, the regular fuel injectors take over the essential job of providing fuel for engine combustion. Sometimes called the fifth fuel injector, the cold start valve must be sealed tight or it will leak out fuel ruining the engine function. It has to work perfectly or the car will not start.
