The camshaft position sensor on your Chrysler Crossfire is just one of the dozens of sensors built into today's passenger vehicles, but one without which your car basically cannot run. The camshaft, responsible for actuating the engine's valves and pistons, is tracked by the camshaft position sensor, which in turn sends electronic data to the engine control computer. The computer uses this information in order to regulate timing. Knowing, for example, the exact positioning of the engine pistons allows the computer to activate combustion sparks at the ideal point in the piston stroke, achieving maximum power and efficiency for maximum fuel economy. A bad camshaft position sensor, sending inaccurate data to the computer, can cause everything from misfiring and increased fuel consumption to the inability of the engine to start.
