Unique to single-overhead camshafts--which is responsible for translating the rotary motion of the engine into the reciprocating motion that is necessary to operate the intake and exhaust valves of the cylinders--like that in a Mercedes 300D, there is a single camshaft per cylinder, meaning there is only one camshaft for both the intake and the exhaust.
