Toyota Prius Replacement Brake Drum Information
Brake drums are a standard feature on the rear wheels of most cars sold in the United States today, including the Toyota Prius. The brake drum mechanism is also used to activate the emergency brake in your car. Brake drums are partially enclosed cylinders connected to your wheels that contain pieces of equipment called brake shoes. Brake shoes have a metal backing attached to a piece of heat-resistant insulation material. When you step down on your brake pedal, you force fluid from the master cylinder, through your brake lines and into the brake drum where it pushes the brake shoes up against the wheels. The brake shoes apply the friction to the wheel that stops your Toyota Prius. Over time, friction forces will wear out brake shoes, leading to the need for new brake components.
