Ford Windstar Replacement Brake Drum Information
New cars sold in the United States today use two types of braking systems: disc brakes on the front wheels and drum brakes on the back wheels. Drum brakes are partially enclosed cylinders that contain brake shoes, pieces of metal fronted with heat-resistant materials. When you step down on your Ford Windstar's brake pedal, you activate the master cylinder, which pushes brake fluid through the brake lines up against the drum brakes. The drum brakes push the brake shoes up against your rear wheels, and the resulting friction stops your vehicle. Drum brakes are also the mechanism behind your emergency brake. The heat-resistant materials in your brake shoes invariably start to wear down after many miles on the road.
