Your Dodge Dakota's automatic transmission solenoid is a valve that regulates the flow of hydraulic fluid in and out of your vehicle's automatic transmission. This hydraulic fluid creates the pressure that activates the gear in Drive mode. When hydraulic pressure decreases, the vehicle remains in Neutral or Park gear. The characteristic sign of a defective automatic transmission solenoid is an automatic transmission that will not shift into gear. At first, you'll notice that your engine isn't shifting into the proper gear while you're driving your car. Your gearshift may jump gears when you try to use it. Your vehicle may not shift down into the proper speed when you come to a stop in traffic. You may also notice the "Check Engine" warning light flashing on in your dashboard instrument panel.
