Porsche 944 Replacement Alternator Information
A Porsche 944 alternator is responsible for converting A/C current to D/C current by utilizing diodes. Today's car manufacturers use alternators because they convert power at lower RPMs than generators, which used to be common. Alternators are composed of copper wires and magnetic material and their function is to maintain a charge in the vehicleâs battery and also provide power to the vehicle accessories. A bad alternator may be to blame if the vehicle is hard or slow to turn over, the car may shut off, or the lights are dim. Generally, an alternator will not be to blame if the car starts unless the alternator is overcharging your battery. This could be the problem if the battery constantly needs water added to it or needs several replacements. Sometimes, the symptoms of a bad alternator may indicate a problem with the battery or starter instead. Some years of the Porsche 944 had external voltage regulators. This means that the alternator had a voltage regulator outside of it, rather than inside, like many newer cars. The benefit of this is that if the alternator is not holding a charge, the voltage regulator can be replaced separately, so it is possible that the entire alternator may not need replacing. The regulator can be bypassed in order to test the alternator.
