Mazda CX7 Replacement Air Fuel Ratio Sensor Information
Oxygen sensors are common in today's passenger vehicles like your Mazda CX7, with many models now using three or four to provide feedback to the engine control computer regarding the oxygen content of exhaust gases. First utilized in the 1970s, front (or upstream) O2 sensors provide data to the engine computer that allows it to fine-tune the air/fuel mixture being delivered for combustion. As technology has improved, the response of O2 sensors has become better, though they currently are still useful primarily during idle, mild acceleration and at cruising speeds. During heavy acceleration, however, they are basically ignored by the engine control computer, which is why the more accurate AFR, or air fuel ration sensor, came into being.
