The air conditioning process starts with your AC compressor. The AC compressor is a powerful pump that compresses gaseous refrigerant so that it's more manageable. The process of compression introduces heat into the refrigerant, which is removed in the next phase of the air conditioning process as the refrigerant travels through the AC condenser. When refrigerant leaves the AC condenser, it's a liquid at the freezing temperature of water. Since ice crystals can damage air conditioning equipment, they must be removed, and this takes place in the AC receiver drier.
