Detailed Notes: The Valeo units have what is called a "floating stator", meaning that when the unit is assembled the rotor is not pressed into the alternator castings like a conventional alternator, but is placed/centered in the housing and held in place by the pressure of the through bolts holding the entire assembly together. If these units are dropped, or are subject to pressure during installation,the stator can actually shift slightly which will cause noises that range from a magnetic type 'hum' to a metal-on-metal noise.

A Bosch Alternator is compatible with BMW 318tis with model years '95, '96, '97, '98 and '99. The Alternator charges a battery when you drive and powers the electrical devices as the motor is moving. When the Alternator fails, the motor will still run but no power will be created. BMW 318tis from model years 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999 will work with this replacement part. Different cars and trucks are unlikely to be compatible, so this part should not be used on those cars or trucks.
